For more than twenty five years, I have been active in many community arts projects, most notably as co-director of the Pockets of Perception Project (aka POP Student Design Team) since its inception. My co-director Wendy Sample and I mentored three different POP Teams from 2010 to 2016, bringing together students from various high schools in Dearborn, and guiding them to collaborate and create large scale, permanently installed works of public art. The teams created distinctive indoor and outdoor public sculptures, and a captivating mosaic mural installed in the new John Dingell Transit Station. With my new co-director Sunshine Durant, we guided the fourth POP Team as they painted a mural on Schaefer Avenue in Dearborn during the summer of 2018.
